You Can Ring My Bell

Do you remember that song from the 70's? Was it Anita Ward? I could wail on a karaoke version of that. Any superstars out there think they got the chops, give me a shout and we'll throw it down.

Oh, back to my point, we now have the Pancake Mountain theme song (Brendan Canty's old school original version) available as a ring tone. If you wanna download it and be the coolest kids on the block, go to this page and take it (it's free baby).

If you were at our Jenny Lewis shoot, then you my friend, might be in January's SPIN magazine. They published one of Tracy's great photos from the shoot (page 34). See what happens when you miss a dance party (now's a good time to tell your parents how they've ruined your life by not taking you to every PM dance party).

Love and Kisses,
your pal

Rufus Leaking

PS:  Our web page and email were down for awhile last Friday night to Saturday morning) so if you sent us mail and had it sent back, try again. Sorry 'bout that.

Hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving. I ate so much I could barely move and as you know, goats will eat almost anything in the world. Lots of tofu turkey but no tin cans, that's just a popular misconception that I hate.

Photos from the Robert Randolph show are up on the web page now. Also instead of spending lots of money on holiday gifts that you don't really need, why not bug your parents to adopt a dog for you (parents please send hate mail to captain perfect, not me). They're not called man's best friend for nothing, but they are a lot of work. To learn more about where to adopt go to http://www.hsus.org/.

And to celebrate my love of dogs, here is a clip of Nellie Mckay performing "The Dog Song" for us.

Hello,

When your fans start getting tattoos of you, you know you're in some elite company: William Shatner, Big Bird, Lionel Richie, all are so beloved that their fans want them on their body for the rest of their lives. Now while I don't condone this, you must admit this is a thing of beauty (especially compared to the tattoo Captain Perfect has of Mr. T. Am I right?).

Speaking of heroes, our friends from Chic-a-go-go came to town to visit. Take a look at me and Ratso doing a great duet from our earlier show "The Ratso and Rufus Hour". Most of you are probably too young to remember it, but it was my stepping stone to stardom.

Also starting in January, we will be available in Australia through Shock Records, YAY, and to celebrate going down under we're giving away two tickets to tomorrows showing of Capitol of Punk at the Warehouse Theater. Thanks to Yellow Arrow for donating the tickets!

To win the tickets just email me who you think is my favorite Aussie band or musician (HINT: it's not Midnight Oil).

See you after Thanksgiving with more dance parties.

Your pal,

Rufus Leaking

Hey Mountaineers,

I know there is some confusion as to where some clips are located. There's been a lot of shuffling going on, but here's the skinny on where to find them on YouTube:

Our friends at Rock and Romp are having a Halloween party on Saturday, October 28th and the always great Eyeball Skeleton will be playing. For more information, go to their website at http://rocknromp.com.

Also on the 28th the good people at The Flywheel Arts Collective (East Hampton, Massachusetts) are having a Pancake Mountain showing from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Wear your costumes!

And don't forget to watch us tomorrow (and every Friday) on the Plum Network at midnight.

Until we meet again, as our buddy Rick Derringer says,"Keep on rocking!"

Rufus Leaking

You would think since I'm such a critic on Conspicuous Consumption (look up the word 'oniomania') that you might not find us in such tony cities as Aspen, Vail, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and the Hamptons, but you'd be wrong! Through the amazing PLUM network, you can now watch Pancake Mountain every Friday night (starting this Friday) at midnight. See below for a list of channels.

Are you ready for this - even bigger news! This coming week we have three (that's right - 3!!!!) HUGE Dance Parties. 3! In one week! WOW!

    and

  • Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins on Sunday, October 15th.

Sign-up sheets will be on our website by Friday.

Tuesday, September 26, 2006

The second best breakfast food (behind Pancakes, of course) is French Toast. It also happens to be name of one of our favorite bands who will be playing for us this Sunday at the Crafty Bastards Festival (To find out more about this annual craft festival in DC's Adams Morgan area, click on the button!).

Crafty Bastards

You DON'T need to sign up for this one. Just come on down and hop on the stage. Our taping (and the band) will begin at 12:45 pm.

In other news: Me and Flaming Lips front man, Wayne Coyne, were caught backstage at the Virgin Music Festival doing Karaoke together (you won't believe the song we chose). I really think this clip will silence all those critics that keep saying I can't sing. To check it out go here.

Was I right? Can you believe my range?

Rufus Leaking Reporting from Dupont Circle, Pancake Mountain

A few weeks ago me and some of the Pancake Mountain Crew got behind the wheel and took a road trip to Athens, Georgia. Had to get in one more adventure before the end of summer. The trip was fantastic!. We met a lot of cool people (but of course, we don't hang out with anything else!) and got to put on TWO dance parties while we were there - with Athen's legends Pylon and Elf Power.

(Here are some of the Photos from the Elf Power show - thanks so much to Scott and Daniel for sending these to us!)

Elf Power Elf Power

Pylon performed not 1, not 2 but ~3~ amazing songs for us, I can't remember when I've danced this much. The videos will be posted as soon as we can get them ready for the web. Stay tuned.

Pictures from the Guster Dance Party in July and the X Dance party in August are also online now in the PHOTOS section.

X

Coming up on Sunday, October 1st we're going to be filming a live episode at the Crafty Bastards Art Festival at 12:45. The whole crew will be there (me, The Captain, Garnett, etc.) and our musical guest will be DC's own French Toast (http://www.frenchtoastdc.com). No sign up sheet needed for this one, just come on down!

Click on the art for more information about the Fair.

Also i'd like to introduce my friend Tracy (who took this great photo of me and OK GO) as she will be writing and handling a lot of the Fall Dance party announcements. You can reach her through email here: tracy@pancakemountain.com

A new season of great episodes is right around the corner.

Helllllo -

Thank you to everyone who came to the X dance party.  We apologize for the long delay and short set.  Although we do our best to get you up and dancing as quick as possible, working with a traveling rock band can be hard to predict. Thanks for your patience as we continue to improve this aspect of our show.

But did X rock or what? I hope everyone had a good time. To take a look at some of the footage go here

http://pancakemountain.com/flash/x/

(you must have flash to view this). Now before you start writing me, IT IS a rough cut!  The skit will be longer, the hippie music gone, and the final song remixed before it goes on the air, but it gives you a little idea of how amazing it was.

Thanks again.

RUFUS LEAKING

BTW: Thanks for all the great emails about other recent shoots. (Tilly and the Walls, Guster, Pssap) They will be up on the web very soon.

Hello-

The sign up for Guster is now up on our website. Sorry for the delay. We thought it was going to take place at Wolf Trap but had to move it to the AIM studio in Arlington. This means we won't be able to accommodate quite as many people as usual but if you don't make this one, we have a lot more fun shows around the corner in August!

Hope you like them.

Thanks to everyone who pre-ordered the new DVD.
All orders have been shipped and should be arriving shortly.

The DVD is already getting some pretty nice reviews. Here’s one from today’s Washington Post.

And here is one from this month’s Punk Planet which explains the show better then I ever could.

There is a dance party this Friday with Psapp.  Rufus loves this band and so will you. We will post the sign-up Wednesday.

Fort Reno this week will feature SENTAI, LEN BIAS, and THE ENGINE ROOM on Monday, June 26th, and CITY GOATS, MACHETRES, and THE FEDERAL CITY FIVE on Thursday, June 29th.

And I promise we will have a clip of the Buzzcocks teaching Captain Perfect how to ride a bike very soon.

Until then, play croquet!

Scott

June 19th, 2006

Yeah! Tilly and the Walls was fantastic! Thanks to everybody who came out.

The next dance party is with Pssap on Friday, June 30th. Mark your calendars and watch for the sign-up form to be available soon! (You can read a recent review of Psapp here at the Washington Post. )

The new DVD's are now shipping, yeah, but we have a lot of orders (and very little help) so please be patient and allow 5 to 10 business days before calling to holler at me about your lost order. Actually I'd rather you call Captain Perfect about those.

As speculation grows about the show, we've decided to at least do two more episodes, especially with our new footage of The Buzzcocks trying to teach Captain Perfect to ride a bike (while 'rain drops keep falling on my head' plays) and a great bit with Rufus Leaking heckling Coheed and Cambria about 'rock opera'. So we can't stop quite yet.

Thanks again for your support.

~ Rufus L. Leaking

PM3 vs. MI3

As an astute follower of entertainment, I realized that the launch of our next episode of Pancake Mountain is on the exact same day that Mission Impossible III hits the theaters. The big time movie executives in Hollywood are nervous that we will steal their thunder. But, despite their protests, we are going to move forward and go toe-to-toe -- Captain Perfect against Mr. Cruise if you will -- with Mission Impossible III. I'm confident we will prevail!

So if you have a limited amount of money, vote with you wallet and go with us, PANCAKE MOUNTAIN. And to show you our love and support, we are giving you another sneak preview from the new episode. Below is a link to an amazing performance by The Subways - Enjoy!

Paul and his gang are going to screen some PM episodes tomorrow (Saturday the 18th) at the Warehouse Theater (1017 7th st NW DC). The first screening will be at 10:00 a.m. and the second at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $5 (kids are free). They offer great coffee and baked goods (and I think tomorrow they're adding pancakes to the menu!) For more info call 202-783-3933.

WOW, I'm the happiest puppet in the world! 2006 has been great.

We've already had Craig Wedren, Nellie McKay, Metric, The Subways, and Deerhoof on the show. Can it get any better? Heck yeah! March 19th (a Sunday) we have THE GO! TEAM.  This is one amazing band. They've made a video that I think is one of the greatest things ever! To check it out go here and click on the bottom video called 'Lady Flash'. (Not many people know this, but I'm a Double Dutch champ also.)

The GO! Team

***The new DVD will be coming out on May 1st. *** Yay!
Also, we have sold out of all the t-shirts and have not decided yet if we will print any more.  I think we need new ones that say things like "Rufus Rocks" or "I Love Rufus."

Hello to all our friends at SXSW. Sorry we're not there this year. But next year! If it's your first time there try Threadgill's, Matt's El Rancho and Chuys - all very good for not much moo'la.

I read an article recently (yes, puppets can read) that talked about how schools have to cut down on teaching the arts. This MUST NOT HAPPEN!!! If you have kids, make sure they're being taught music, painting, photography, etc. If not then call me, and I will come down there and slap them with my furry paws, just kidding. I don't believe in violence, but I will send Henry Rollins down there to "talk" to them.

And to help teach the kids, we're doing our part. Check out this clip of Emily from METRIC showing a few lucky "mountaineers" how to sing and dance. Photos from the Metric Dance Party.

February 15, 2006

Hello, It’s your old friend, Captain Perfect, here with some news.

First, we are pleased to announce that the Warehouse Theater will start hosting Saturday morning screenings of Pancake Mountain every month! Starting this Saturday, February 18th, you can catch two episodes of PM plus see selected clips from upcoming shows. The Warehouse has a full coffee bar and offers light food (muffins, bagels) and by the next screening, they are hoping to offer a pancake breakfast. Yeah!

We love The Warehouse and so should you!  They offer a much needed outlet for the arts in DC.  Not many venues in DC (or any city) offer the diversity they do from small punk rock shows to experimental theater to kid screenings of our shows. So hat's off to Paul Ruppert and his team over there.

Just when you thought our 2006 shows were already off the hizzy (Bright Eyes, Deerhoof, Metric, Nellie McKay) here we are planning a new dance party for March 4th with The Subways. They’re new, they're from London, and Peter Gaston in SPIN magazine says, “If I could revisit my later teenage years, I’d wear out my Nirvana records more then I did, save up money for a Gibson SG guitar, and start a band just like The Subways.”

This is in addition to the METRIC show on March 8th. It's like Rocktober but it's March so it's more like Marchtober (hey I just made that up).

Anyway, more about the dance parties next week.

Who says I’m not really flying?

The Captain

Here are the details for Saturday’s screening:

Where: Warehouse Theater 1017-21 7th ST, NW DC
What:  Screening of PM episodes plus New Stuff!
When: Episodes 1-3 from 10:00 am to 11:30
Episodes 4-6 from 11:30-1:00 pm
Both showings will feature clips from upcoming episodes
Cost: $5.00 (kids 5 and under free)

FROM DERRINGER TO DEERHOOF

Hey kids- Watch Deerhoof at the last Dance Party.

I don't think it gets any better then this.

I get a lot of letters of praise for introducing so many different genres of music to kids. I always think if I like it then kids will like it too. Of course I think I have better taste then the average goat, but I'm the modest type, LOL.

Being different and innovative should be rewarded, so my question is: why isn't Deerhoof playing the half-time show at the Super Bowl? Are beer-drinking, hotdog-eating, football-watching Americans not ready for avant-garde art rock? Give me the bunny song any day over Janet Jackson or the Rolling Bones. Send me your thoughts and I'll post the ones I find most interesting (try to keep it under a page - goats are philosophers, not readers).

See you at the Metric show on March 8

Peace and love kids,

RUFUS

Btw: If you watch the above video you will notice that Greg Saunier is playing drums with his bare hands. Well let me just say, as cool as it looks, IT HURTS! My little paws are still sore from trying this, so use caution when trying this at home.

For those who couldn't make it, we have another one coming up this Sunday, January 22th at 1:00 p.m. (in Arlington) with Nellie McKay. If you don't know about Nellie, go here to find out about this amazing talent: http://www.nelliemckay.com/.  For this shoot we only need about 15 kids and they need to be between 6 and 26. Email us to get on the guest list!

Climb Trees

As I drive around this time of year, I see christmas trees thrown out willy nilly. Now, we all love trees, but few of us appreciate the tree farmers, which is funny because most of them are TRUE environmentalist. Here is part of an interview with my favorite tree farmer, Chuck Leavell.

green forever,
Rufus.
